Securing Your Legacy is a free estate planning workshop and legal clinic hosted by DC Affordable Law Firm in partnership with DC's Department of Insurance, Securities, and Banking (DISB) and the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). Held each March, June, and October at accessible locations throughout the District, the Securing Your Legacy series typically welcomes 65–100 community members at each event.
The program is designed to help DC residents understand the essential legal tools that protect their families, preserve their assets, and ensure their wishes are honored. Participants receive practical education about wills, powers of attorney, advance medical directives, beneficiary designations, and strategies for protecting and transferring homes and other assets. During the event, eligible participants may also complete on-site property ownership checks and legal intakes, allowing them to be connected with participating nonprofit legal organizations for free legal representation following the workshop.
DC Affordable Law Firm recruits and trains skilled pro bono volunteers to work alongside experienced staff from participating organizations, providing individualized guidance and helping attendees navigate next steps.
While the series places particular emphasis on reaching modest- and low-income homeowners seeking to preserve generational wealth and prevent housing instability, homeownership is not required to participate. The estate planning education and legal services offered through Securing Your Legacy are available to all income-eligible DC residents because every family deserves the opportunity to protect their health, their wealth, and their legacy.
