DC Affordable Law Firm Hires Sherene Thomas as First Development Manager

WASHINGTON, DC — DC Affordable Law Firm (DCALF) is excited to announce that Sherene Thomas has been hired as their first Development Manager, a new role for the organization. Formerly a portfolio manager at Equal Justice Works, Thomas began her tenure at DCALF in October of 2022.

In her role with Equal Justice Works, Thomas was responsible for fundraising and relationship management. She also supervised and mentored more than 80 public interest legal fellows. She is a former Administrative Law Judge for Florida’s Department of Economic Opportunity and has worked as the District Outreach Director for Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

She is passionate about advocating for justice and has served on the Board of Directors and Legal Panel for the ACLU of Florida and as Legislative Chair for the Orlando Chapter of the National Congress of Black Women. She has a B.S. in Psychology and Criminology, an MPA from Florida State University, and her J.D. from Barry University School of Law.

At a time when economic security and affordable access to legal representation remain out of reach for so many DC residents, DCALF’s work is more vital than ever before. I am delighted to join the DCALF team, where I will focus on increasing organizational funding and donor support for DCALF’s important work,” says Thomas.

As Development Manager for DCALF, Thomas will be the organization’s first staff member dedicated to fund development. She will design and lead the organization’s fundraising strategy and collaborate with DCALF’s staff and Board of Directors to diversify and grow the organization’s annual budget. The creation of this new development role is part of a greater expansion effort by DCALF to meet the increased demand for their services created by the pandemic.
