Legal Director

DCALF is seeking a Legal Director who is enthusiastic about bolstering the daily work of our 13-person
legal team, supporting our organization’s race equity initiatives, and helping to foster new approaches to enhance our organization’s impact and evolution. The Legal Director will be a leader with a record of practice in legal services, preferably in DC Superior Court and/or Immigration Court, and an interest in stewarding the growth and professional development of recent law graduates as they enter the legal profession. The Legal Director will work in partnership with DCALF’s Executive Director to drive an equitable, open, collaborative work environment, and will lead Senior Associate and Associate supervision, internal legal operations, and case management practices. The Legal Director will provide oversight of work-products by reviewing written work and providing in-court supervision for cases in all stages of litigation. In addition, the Legal Director will provide direct supervision to a team of three first-year Associates during the summer and fall of 2021. The Legal Director will collaborate with DCALF’s Training Director, Assistant Training Director, Pro Bono Legal Director and Pro Bono Senior Counsel to enhance the ongoing training and litigation support enjoyed by DCALF’s legal team. The Legal Director will report to the Executive Director

This position is based in Washington, DC. Onboarding may occur remotely based on public health considerations; as of
May 2021, DCALF’s staff continues to work remotely. 

Key Responsibilities

 Ensure the provision of high-quality legal services;

 Supervise the work of lawyers in a way that fosters development of excellent lawyering and litigation skills;

 Implement organizational strategy in conjunction with DCALF’s Executive Director and consistent with the
organization’s mission;

 Identify new and creative ways to expand DCALF’s services, while honoring its mission;

 Assist in oversight of legal services revenue, including grant management and internal billing practices;

 Oversee case acceptance and assignment processes;

 Mentor pro bono attorneys and assist in coordinating pro bono partnerships, as needed;

 Build close working relationships with key organizational stakeholders, legal service providers, and community
organizations, and participate in external working groups, as needed; and

 Communicate and collaborate with the Executive Director, Operations and Finance Manager, and key volunteers,
maintaining active engagement and dialogue on all critical administrative and operational issues relating to the


 JD and DC Bar membership;

 A minimum of five years of management and supervisory experience in a law firm, legal service provider, law
school clinical setting, or other similar organization;

 Demonstrated experience representing clients in one or more of DCALF’s practice areas, with a preference for
candidates who have significant experience litigating domestic relations cases;

 Exceptional writing and editing skills;

 Record of passionate advocacy for the legal rights of persons from lower-income brackets and a commitment to
racial equity;

 Record of decisive leadership capabilities; and

 Ability to manage, supervise, and mentor newly licensed lawyers.

 Salary range of $90,000-$95,000 annually, consistent with experience. DCALF offers a 401(K) retirement plan,
medical insurance, elective dental and vision insurance options, and paid vacation, sick, holiday, family and
medical leave.
