DC Affordable Law Firm Receives a $400,000 Grant from the Greater Washington Community Foundation’s Health Equity Fund

WASHINGTON, DC — DC Affordable Law Firm (DCALF) is thrilled to announce that they are a recipient of a $400,000 grant from the Greater Washington Community Foundation’s Health Equity Fund. This transformative grant funding will be paid out over the next two years and is dedicated to closing DC’s racial health and wealth gap.

Over the next two years, DCALF will use this grant funding to:

• represent modest-income DC residents in probate and estate planning matters, helping

  families maintain and increase wealth;

• help DC immigrants attain or maintain the right to legally work in the US;

• represent DC divorcees seeking to protect or obtain deserved financial support;

• provide community trainings and engagements; and,

• train and graduate new public interest attorneys, and increase the size of our legal team.

  “We know that legal issues have a substantial connection to one’s health and well-being, with poor legal outcomes leading to loss of income, assets, safety, housing, and worse,” says DCALF’s Executive Director Gabby Mulnick Majewski. “Through DC Affordable Law Firm’s accessible model, families are able to maintain economic stability and grow resources to help meet other life demands. We are so thankful for the Greater Washington Community Foundation for making the connection between health and access to justice, and facilitating our provision of legal services for DC residents in need through this grant opportunity.”

  This is the first year that the Greater Washington Community Foundation issued grants funded by the historic $95 million Health Equity Fund, which was created to improve economic outcomes and health equity for DC residents. Mindful that health and wealth are inextricably connected, the Greater Washington Community Foundation plans to boldly invest in economic mobility and wealth building in DC’s historically underinvested communities.
